hey all,
i'm working with apple events for the first time, and i'm at a bit of
a lose in my search for documentation. essentially i've opened my
target app with AE monitor and sniffed the AEs while running
applescripts against it. its great how it gives me the rb functions
to call the same event, but i dont see any way to figure out the
returned data?
i'm really new to this, so any help would be appreciated.
Hi Mike -
When AE Monitor captures an event, it also captures the target
application's reply (if there is one) and groups it with the original
event. You can see the reply by double-clicking the event (blue arrow
heading up); the reply will be shown below (green arrow going left).
However, AE Monitor won't do all the hard work for you. You still have
to understand what the application is saying and how to use the RB
AppleEvent objects to access it. I usually warn people that AppleEvents
are one one of Apple's most complex data structures, but at least
you'll have a starting point. For RB, you should start with the various
AppleEvent.Reply... properties.
Good luck!
