I really can't pay for it, but I found a commandline program which turns
midi's into text files and the other way around. Those text files are way
easier to create, so I'm going to do that.

the spec, which i recommend. But, you might be able to piece together
something from various sites. Each of them are incomplete in their own
way. but, getting the hard copy spec is everything you ever wanted to
know about MIDI.
