There was some disagreement about the method of payment. Not the payment or billing or amount owed but the method. One wanted to use Paypal to move money internationally, but it can be expensive for the recipient. The other wanted a physical cheque. And the dispute lead to the developer not being paid "on time" and he planted a time bomb (literally) in the source project in an encrypted module, then quit working on the project. I found it AFTER the time bomb went off on a lot of the clients customers machines.

I had similar payment issues but resolved those without resorting to a time bomb, and have in fact retained this client long term.
