Am I assuming correctly that if you use VB DLLs, this will only work in
Windows?

If they are VB6 alike DLLs, then they are ActiveX components.  You
should be able to talk to them that way.
Actually, all of VB6 is ActiveX, whatever extension.  (ActiveX = Ole
objects)
