3 other possibilities:

1. Baud rate, parity, number of stop bits mismatch
2. Flow control problem, although usually this results in missing characters
rather than misread characters
3. Cable grounding problem

That was my 1st guess, but I connected a terminal app on the other end.
So what I enter there should appear in cleartext in my app, but it
doesn't. So it looks like some encoding prob to me ...
