AUX means auxiliary device... the place for the second CONsole...
most often used during debug of drivers ...
also meant the BW rather than the COLOR viewport...
still used in embedded. winhec notes give much more...

This is also (apparently) true for LPT (printer port), COM
(serial port), PRN (printer), AUX (?), and NUL (probably UNIX's /dev/
null).
