Thanks for the suggestion, but that wouldn't be feasible in this case.
I'd rather have a fix than a workaround.

If you have an icon already just make a bigger icon (if needed) that is a 
composite of the two.

You can even do it on the fly if you need to...and make a subclass to handle 
the whole thing. Much better solution IMO.
