The simple truth is "Thieves don't buy", if they can't steal it, they won't use it. So all copy protection does is annoy your legitimate users, the ones that might send you some money.

Copy protection is only effective against the casual pirate.

If they can find (or are given) a crack *most* individuals will use it. If they cannot find a crack or serial number for software they like, and do not want to pay the asking price, they will look for and evaluate similar software which is cheaper.

For example:

  If userLikesSoftware Then
    If crackFound Or validSerialNumberFound Then
Return "95% chance that user will use crack instead of buy software"
    Elseif experiencedHacker Then
Return "New crack distributed... expect fewer sales."
    Else
      If (askingPrice > userWillingToPay) Then
        While userFindsSimilarSoftware
If similarFeaturesInOtherSoftware And (otherSoftwarePrice < askingPrice) Then
Return "Lost sale to a competing software package."
          End If
        Wend
        If (askingPrice > userWillingToPayReevaluated) Then
Return "User gives up for now."
        End If
      End If
    End If
  End If

// If the user got this far then...
  Return "NEW SALE!"
