Joe:

Thanks for the reply..I have the same memory as oyu on a G5 iMac. It only compiles the plugins once. I've even bought a new hard drive with nothing on it but OS X and RB, just to give as much swap space as I could possibly give it. Still having the same problems. What I'm not understanding is why I'm not seeing a lot of posts about slowness. I don't know if it's just me, or if the RB community accepted this ridiculous slowness, or if the RB community is moving on to some other environment....I just don't get it.

Hi List:

Does anyone know what Linker Error #3 means? I'm attempting to compile my application, that has compiled perfectly under 5.5, and I get this error under r3, each and every time. It takes EVERY BIT of 15 minutes to even compile. It just sits there and sits there, eating up ALL of my system resources so I can't do another thing until it throws this error. Anyone else experiencing these kinds of problems with RB? I could not use r1 or r2 because I couldn't waste all of the compiling time. For universals, RB gives no choice but to waste all of this time, which is why I'm wasting more time trying to compile under r3, to prepare for Universal Binaries. Patience is a virtue, but this is totally ridiculous.

Hi Mike

Sorry, I have no idea what that error number means...

BTW I also sometimes get VERY long compile times, sometimes exceeding 10 minutes. I've found there are two causes this:

1. Insufficient memory on my computer leading to frequent paging. Newer versions of RB use a phenomenal amount of memory, and if you don't have enough real memory the OS will have to swap, slowing things down tremendously. My 7 MB project file uses over 1 GB of real memory plus about 2 GB of virtual memory. I have 2 GB of RAM and wish my system held more. :-)

2. Precompiling plugins can take a very very long time. I have about a dozen plugins and it takes over 5 minutes to precompile them. RB has a plugin cache so you should only need to wait through the precompiling once. But it will need to recreate the plugin cache each time you use a different version of RB, or anytime you change your plugin folder.

It's also possible the plugin cache isn't being created properly due to file permission or other access problems and thus you have to unfortunately wait through precompiling the plugins every time.

FWIW My 7 MB project takes about 20 seconds to compile in 2006r3 on my MacBook, and it took 40 seconds on my old 500 MHz Powerbook. So I'm sure you can eventually dramatically reduce your 15 minute compiles to something much more reasonable.

Hope this helps,
