I've really only used MySql for dynamic content in PHP pages, so I
haven't really tried anything like what you're doing, but I imagine that
you can add some security by doing two things-
1: Forward the connection over ssh, so you benefit from good encryption.
2: Allow only a handful of hosts that you know you'll be working from,
not just an open door policy to anyone with the right password.
I haven't done anything of the sort, but I imagine you could also keep
access totally local and use PHP to poll the db and present the data as
XML, then use SOAP to work with it. Every time I try to do that sort of
thing I get a headache, so I'm useless to help, but I thought I'd toss
out the idea.

Thanks guys, I accessed my home mysql database from work succesfully.
But what are the pitfalls of having outside access to the databse? Is
it easy to crack access? What is an alternative? Scripted Access like
PHP? Is there a realbasic alternative?
Thanks.
Patrick
