Since your "Translator" software converts sound files ( I bought Translator
some time back ) , do you know of any open source code ( RB or C++ ) that
can read and manage Apple Loops, including all the slice and MIDI chunks ?
Apple seems insistent on not documenting it.
Not really, we are toying with it though (time will tell). The
"standard" is somewhat in flux. What I consider as the "standard"
would be how the Apple Loop Utility (used to be called the Soundtrack
Loop Utility) reads and writes the files. That has changed through
the revisions on that software; not terribly so, but still it's changed.
For example, Translator would write an AppleLoop, then all of a
sudden a new version of ALU wouldn't recognize either the slices or
the database entries (Genre, InstTypes, etc.). Then we'd change
things so they would read on old verisons and new versions. Or
perhaps GarageBand would stop recognizing them.
In other words, a format is only as good as how the supporting
programs read them.
I don't see the logic of Apple not wanting people to mass-produce
AppleLoops, it would be in their best interest. Perhaps it's because
they keep changing the spec slightly. However, I do think it's
finalized and their isn't that much more to do with it, aside from
adding more supported database types.
