Seems to me that it would be an added selling point for RB if some time in the future they were able to improve string handling to be more closely comparable with perl performance wise.
String handling is such a common task and if it can be done in a more readable fashion than perl it has to be a good thing. There really shouldn't have to be a need to use 3rd party plugins like elfdata to get the speed. Such stuff should be built in.
