Hi all, here a few data to clear the things (from my side):
Hardware: --------- a. Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pentium IV 2.8GHz Windows XP, SP II Novell suse linux 10.1 b. PowerBook G4 Alu, 1.5 Ghz, 15" Mac OS X 10.4.8 [latest software updates installed] Software: --------- linux: REALbasic 2006 Release 4 Standard [Std or Pro is just a matter of license number: free or $ _and_ some functionalities] Windows XP: REALbasic 2006 Release 4 Standard Mac OS X: REALbasic 2006 Release 4 Pro Working Method: --------------- Usually create projects under Mac OS X and check them on Windows XP, then (eventually) under Novell suse linux. [I stopped using REALbasic 5.5.5 because it is a waste of money to buy upgrades and not using the software ! :( ] [but I was happy - really happy - with 5.5.5 IDE] What do I expect from a software ? ---------------------------------- Here I spoke for REALbasic: I have it for one Platform (OS) and I expect to get the same developper experience when I use it under another Platform. OK, I am more comfortable with Mac OS X (both as the hardware - Keyboard, Touch-Pad / Mouse). OK, I dislike the Keyboard / Touch-Pad of my Intel machine. So, forget about it. When I experience that I cannot store / restore styled text on one platform (Novell suse linux), I have to use RTF (Windows XP SPII) and a different kind of styled text files on Mac OS X, I am angry, legitimately angry. Worst, when I want to establish a win-win solution (add REALbasic exposure / get some money) and I cannot do it because of the product, this specific OS Platform, I do lost my smile. REALbasic and localization: --------------------------- No, there is no French localized version of REALbasic (to my knowledge) and <place-your-adjective-here> no REALbasic 2006 Release 4 French version. Only r3 was release in a <place-your-adjective-here> French version. * I am not sure that the documentation was localized (I do not remember / I do not searched); if you want to be sure, go to http://www.realsoftware.fr and search in the download page(s). Linux as an OS -------------- Novell suse linux 10.1 I am really positive about this distribution: it warns me (and is the only one to do that: neither Mac OS X 10.4.8 nor Windows XP SPII do that) if the power supply is down (the cable goes out of the portable or there is no more electricity available - shortage from the outside world or error from the inside). It also warn me when the battery is totally charged. [A dialog appears on screen to give that speedback]. At last (for the moment), I do not talk about business model, I only make a point (a report) and express myself: r4 is not really better than r2, and linux version is not on par with Mac OS X nor Windows XP. This hurts me. Also, REAL Software can be hurt when a potential Pro buyer falls into the same trap I put my foot on since REALbasic 2006 Release 1 / Release 2 / Release 3 / Release 4... My usage of a linux REALbasic IDE --------------------------------- I already states my usage, but here I go again: I wanted (and found a magazine ready to publish it) to write columns in French for French newbies to explain how to use the product, with an application as a article support. That in a two-month basis, every article feature an application, not a technology higlight. So all I wanted to sold was articles targeted at newbies, not software. What I needed was: a. a French version of REALbasic (none exists / is available to the general public) b. an usable version (install as simply as the Windows version, have styled text I/O, etc.) c. a magazine who publish the articles [I had one], d. readers that will read the articles, enjoy the reading and the installation, then enjoy the programs, put their own additions to 'my programs' and at last, share their experience with the magazine|with me to build a 'community'. My feeling about what I read in this list, Vol. 33, Issue 60 thru 64 -------------------------------------------------------------------- OK, I give up. No answer from RS (Dec 21-Dec 22, 2006), overall bad user reports, let me think that this version is "We have a linux version", not the similar application (same as the one we have on Mac OS X and|or Windows XP). I will concentrate my efforts to the other two platforms! Sorry for the waste of bandwidth, Emile Schwarz * Since I had troubles with the linux version, I stopped talking about the (already done ? one-to-one ?) French linux version of REALbasic. _______________________________________________ Unsubscribe or switch delivery mode: <http://www.realsoftware.com/support/listmanager/> Search the archives of this list here: <http://support.realsoftware.com/listarchives/lists.html>
