Definitely read the stuff a the ipodlinux.org
They have figured out a ton of stuff for you
You can read the data (but it's a pain because of the format)
And you can write
I used libipod and called it via declares
Works dandy on OS X and Linux with no modifications
On Windows you have to do a bit more work
