You can also use the MBS plugin
folderitem.kindMBS
If you need a 5.5.5 version of any of the charles declares though,
ask me. I've re written quite a few of them to work in 5.5.5, most
requiring support classes though like the Core Foundation classes in
this instance.

There is code in my declares book <http://www.declareSub.com/> to
retrieve the kind string for an item. It's in the Launch Services
chapter. The code can be revised in light of additions to
REALbasic, but it should work as is.
