I agree that ByRef usually isn't the best solution. In this particular circumstance, it solved many issues with one simple refactoring.

However, I'll add my two cents about readability in a general way: any time new keywords and syntax are added, the language becomes more complex and harder to read. Unless we have a significant added value, we don't generally like to reserve new keywords. It's always something to be considered.
