OpenGL doesn't know anything about file formats - it's entirely up to you to parse files and convert them into OpenGL-compatible data. If you really want to load 3DMF, here are the specs: <http://developer.apple.com/documentation/QuickTime/QD3D/ qd3dmetafile.htm>

Personally I'd start with just trying to get a few hard-coded triangles on screen, then tackle a less convoluted format (like OBJ or 3DS).
