We are looking into some options for our forum, like email

That could be a decent solution to bridge the gap. I like that idea. :-)

But, email notification of a forum post still means that I need to peruse the forums. Also, how did I get the email notification set up in the first place? Would I need to "subscribe" to every topic posted? Again, I'd spend far too much time logging into the forums and it would seriously affect my work flow. As it is now, I can be coding in one screen and have mail open in the other. As new topics/ answers are posted, they pop up in my mail. Then, while I'm waiting for my next debug build to complete, I can pop over to the mail window and join the conversation. If I just left the forum page open on the window, I'd need to continually update the top level area list and then go into each level to determine if any new topics had been posted or answered.

By the way - this discussion is a perfect example of how I can do real work and still stay in tune with the discussion...
