With all due respect, I am only reflecting what other people have
said. People have been offended by this announcement and they are
expressing what they feel. If this announcement is "boneheaded,"
then why not call it what it is since RS is the one who suddenly
dumped it on us without any consultation whatsoever. If Geoff is
going to reverse this decision, he will have to take
responsibility for the poor judgement involved. This is not
something that he can hide from. Probably in most people's eyes
the term boneheaded is probably a very kind way of stating the
reality of the situation and they are thinking of much more
expressive terms. So the use of the term boneheaded fits the
reasoning behind the situation and is actually a restrained
response.
Do you have any idea of what all the variables that were required to
make such a decision?
Variables that go beyond the people that use this message list. As
useful as it can be, it's not decision that a CEO makes hastily,
believe me. Your talking about a CEO (and management team) that has
nurtured a company from a 2 man operation to total sales of over 100k
with all but one year in the black (as far as I know)
Do you actually think Geoff thought there would be no repercussions?
What term would you use to describe throwing away your core
experts, tarnishing your reputation, and losing a few paying
customers?
Reputations are being tarnish on both sides of this fence from where
I'm sitting.
Nothing about this decision is of benefit to the RS
community or RS itself. Time has run out and soft pedaling it will
not win any converts either. Sometimes the arrow has to penetrate
the heart and sting before something is done.
If for some reason (which I seriously doubt), the decision is reverse
I doubt very seriously it was due to your "letter."
People are upset and
if as you say, "Geoff can probably look past the comment" meaning
he ignores it, then he would be minimizing how the community feels
about this situation and that would be an even greater insult.
Killing the NUG is a slap in the face and how could it
be construed otherwise? You can't fix what you don't acknowledge
and Geoff has to acknowledge just how irritated people are by this
decision if he is going to respond to us in truth.
This mess is of RS's own making and it is up to them to clean it
up.
It's the opinion of most of the more active members of the mailing
lists that this is a mess. I'm not buying it at all. And when I read
pissy remarks like these, I get annoyed because it is totally
unprofessional. A LOT more unprofessional than making a difficult
decision that you know will be unpopular but needs to be made for
long term benefit. Sorry it's ridiculous.
If the community is that strong, it will survive due to the work of
some of the more level-headed people. Yeah, it might be splintered,
but even that will change, if it's really that important.
You, and the over more-aggressive opponents, are making assumptions
and accusations that you have no way of proving. All you know is
that you feel "insulted."
Granted the ML is a good community, but that's secondary to how the
tool works. In my opinion, that's what needs to be improved, big
time, along with the documentation.
