I'm at my wit's end with the "Preparing Plugins" stage of the compiler. Any
time I update or change the plugin configuration on my PC with RB2007r1, the
next run or compile results in a complete lockup for 20-30 minutes, a
process which only has about a 50% chance of succeeding. While Preparing
Plugins RB...
* Thrashes my HD.
* Balloons memory use to the limit of my available RAM. (1 GB)
* Locks up the CPU, a 2.2 GHz Athlon X2, so tightly that even invoking Task
Manager to force quit the process takes a minute or two.
* Crashes half of the time, always near the end of the 20 minute
disk-thrash.
* Will occasionally bring Windows XP to its knees, completely locking up the
computer, even my mouse.
I can't believe all this CPU power, RAM, and disk I/O is necessary. It was
bad in RB2005/2006, but at least it completed. Having it crash half the
time, forcing the same process all over again, is just unbearable,
especially when schedules are tight.
What is it doing?
