Except that it's still Objective-C, which means that one will be able to evade memory management. This means that it will be possible to do it by accident, and so the need for complex malloc/ free problem hunting will remain, though perhaps that need will be reduced.

I don't follow what you mean. If you mean that if you turn garbage collection on and accidently call -release somewhere that this will be a hard bug to track down, you'd be wrong. It ignores -retain, - release, and -autorelease.
