I have rather large projects and I find compile times to be just fine. I think this may have to do with how many plugins you have/use -- I generally don't have any. Clearly your experience is different, but don't assume that everybody else's is like yours, or (as you say) it probably would have been a higher priority. Many people think that whatever bugs them most is bugging everybody else too, so it seems obvious to them that it should be RS's top priority. Unfortunately, the thing that bugs different people most is almost always different.
