Hello Dan,
      You may wish to try looking in your System Preferences:Network  
pane.  Using the connection method that you are using (e.g.  
Ethernet), look for Proxies, and see if there is an entry that does  
not look correct - e.g. using some proxy site offshore,etc. for http;  
or see if there is a PAC file that is being used for proxies.
      Failing that, there is a similar pane for the browser you use  
(e.g. Firefox) Preferences: Connection Method.  This will also allow  
you to specify a proxy.
      As to how you could have set a proxy unknowingly, I cannot answer.
