I'm not sure what's sad (I see only half this conversation), but under
Mac OS X, it's standard system behavior that if the suggested file name
in a Save As dialog has an extension, then the user can't get rid of
it.  (I think this is stupid, but I gave up railing against it ages
ago.)  If you want to let your user pick their own extension, then you
simply supply a suggested file name with none.
