I think this is what I will have to do, but if you deleted the original file 
only  after the new file has been successfully saved it means that the newly 
created file will have to be in a different location.

In one of my apps I ran into this problem as for safety reasons I  
write out a whole new file for each save (and only delete the  
original after the new file has been successfully saved). I solved  
the date issue simply by memorizing the original creation date/time,  
saving the new file, and then resetting the creation date to the  
stored date/time. Works fine.
