While it is as simple as that, it would be a good idea to design a full-fledged format with version information and hint information so that you can tell the difference between a valid and non-valid file. There are all sorts of ways to do this, but I would recommend producing a more complete format in specification before just reading and writing bits. Of course, if this is just an application for purely personal use, then perhaps it is just overkill.
