I use power point gif files which are very large in size. What I do is
resize the gif image to what I need including reducing the number of colors
used. I've found that the image size that you define in real pix should be
be same as the gif or jpeg image. 

That problem may be that the area defined in real pix may be smaller than
the actual image, making real pix crunch the image into the defined space.
Sometimes I have reduced quality if I reduce too many color from the
orginal slide, but not to often.
