I have been reading about this...
You CAN use an http server, (this is explained in the Product Guide for Real 
Player G2, in .pdf format) but you just can't get the streaming capabilities 
you can get with the Real Server. Of course, it all depends on what you want 
to do. For example, I have recently been experimenting with encoding real 
media files for different bit rates (16 kbps, 32 etc.) You can actually make 
one .rm file that will have a different coding for each bit rate. So as soon 
as someone opens their realplayer, the player will automatically choose 
which bit rate is good for that computer's specifications. It's pretty cool, 
but won't work without a RealServer.
