From: Clint Lalonde <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: RE: What kind of portable audio acquisition equipment do I Hi Steve, I have been using the Tascam DA-P1 for about a year and a half and have discovered a few things about it. There is no internal speaker on the unit. It has stereo line in and line out RCA jacks, as well as a digital RCA line in and line out jacks. In addition, the DA-P1 has 2 XLR mic/line inputs, which I understand the minidisc does not have. I highly recommend - whatever you decide to purchase - to go with XLR plugs as opposed to mini plugs. The secure connection that an XLR gives is head and shoulders above a mini, which has a tendancy to pop out and/or loosen over time. We use a stereo microphone for field recording (Audio-Technica AT825), which gives an exceptionally nice, clean stereo sound. The DA-P1 also allows you to individually adjust the left/right input levels. It records at either a 44.1k or 48k sample rate. The battery unit is a rechargable ni/cad, which gives us about an hour of record time. We've had a few problems with the DA-P1. For one, DAT is linear tape, so you still have to fast forward and rewind to find spots on the tape. The minidisc allows a bit quicker random access to precise spots in your recording. As well, we've had problems with previously recorded DAT tapes losing control track information in the DA-P1, which means that the timer stops working and the audio skips around. So, we use clean DAT tape everytime. I think DAT tape is a bit more expensive than minidiscs as well. Hope that helps.
