The long term plans are to unify with a community user/identity/authentication service. Ultimately we see no need in maintaining redundant work.
John Hurliman's ongoing work most closely resembles what I would like to do myself. However at this point there is no concrete plan detailing how we might get from here to there. That is very much the subject of our ongoing internal discussions.
