It is not fixed, you can have any number you want. I can't remember offhand how many there are in the default avatars that come with the viewer.
You can map reX avatar joints to SL/OS avatar joints in the avatar xml file, so that f.ex. SL attachments work. - Heikki > A question ¿How many joint points use the RX avatar?.
