Don't refresh on every mouse move. Romano and Gabriele's EAT event-compressor approach can work well, but you can try other things as well (e.g. refresh based on a timer). You can also try making it a "feature". Rather than drawing the line itself, use end-point draggers (which are just faces) and show them.
