Double Apple Bars
1-1/2 c. flour
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1/4 c. butter or margarine at room temperature
1/2 c. plus 2 tbsp packed light brown sugar
1 large egg
1 c. applesauce
2 c. diced, pared, golden delicious apple
1-1/2 c. chopped pecans or walnuts
Heat oven to dg375. Lightly grease a 13- by 9-inch baking pan. Line
with foil. Grease foil again.
Mix flour, cinnamon, baking powder, baking soda and cloves.
Beat butter and 1/2 cup sugar in large bowl with an electric mixer
until fluffy. Beat in egg, then applesauce. Mixture will look curdled.
Stir in flour mixture until blended. Fold in apples and 1/2 cup nuts.
Spread evenly in prepared pan.
In small bowl mix remaining 1 cup nuts and 2 tablespoons brown sugar.
Sprinkle evenly over top of batter. Bake 35 minutes or until edges
pull away from sides of pan and top is lightly browned. Cool in pan on
rack.
Cut into 24 bars.
