Nickel Creek Plays Final Farewell Shows

Nickel Creek concluded their Farewell (For Now) Tour with two shows at the 
Ryman Auditorium in Nashville on Wednesday and Thursday nights (Nov. 28-29).
Although they did not have an opening act, the band (Chris Thile and Sara and 
Sean Watkins) were joined on stage by bassist Mark Schatz, as well as several
musical friends, including Bela Fleck, Tim O'Brien, Benmont Tench, and Gillian 
Welch and David Rawlings. Scott Thile, the band's original bassist (and
Chris' father) also performed with the band, which will go on hiatus for an 
undisclosed amount of time.

Stephen King Praises Steve Earle, Lyle Lovett

Author Stephen King, who occasionally moonlights as a member of the Rock Bottom 
Remainders band, has included new albums by Steve Earle and Lyle Lovett
on his year-end list of favorite music, published in the Dec. 7 issue of 
Entertainment Weekly. Earle's Washington Square Serenade topped the list, 
followed
by Wilco's Sky Blue Sky, Mika's Life in Cartoon Motion, Lyle Lovett and His 
Large Band's It's Not Big It's Large, Ozzy Osbourne's Black Rain, John Fogerty's
Revival and Southern Culture on the Skids' Countrypolitan Favorites.

Country Comic Jim Nesbitt Dies in South Carolina

Country comic and singer-songwriter Jim Nesbitt died Thursday (Nov. 29) at his 
home in Florence, S.C. He would have celebrated his 76th birthday Saturday
(Dec. 1). A native of Bishopville, S.C., he worked as a disc jockey in South 
Carolina and Washington, D.C., but gained national attention while placing
13 musical comedy songs on the Billboard country chart from 1961 through 1970. 
One of those, "Looking for More in '64," reached the Top 10 in 1964. His
Top 20 singles included "Please Mr. Kennedy," "Mother-in-Law," "A Tiger in My 
Tank" and "Runnin' Bare." A compilation album, The Best of Jim Nesbitt, was
released in 1999 by Lost Gold Records.

Grammy Country CDs Coming in January

Two country compilations will be released on Jan. 8 as part of the Ultimate 
Grammy Collection CD series. The contemporary country CD will feature Vince
Gill, Mary Chapin Carpenter and the Judds, as well as George Jones' "Choices" 
and June Carter Cash's "Keep on the Sunny Side." The classic country CD will
offer songs by Roger Miller, Tammy Wynette and Johnny Cash. Other compilations 
in the series include contemporary R&B and contemporary pop (to be released
Nov. 27) and contemporary rock, classic R&B and classic pop (arriving Jan. 8).
