1935: 13-year-old Judy Garland signed her first contract with MGM.

1938: Skinnay Ennis and His Orchestra played "Thanks for the 
Memories" for the first time on "The Bob Hope Show" on the NBC-Red 
Radio Network.

1942: Glenn Miller and his orchestra played together for the last 
time, at the Central Theater in Passaic, New Jersey, prior to 
Miller's entry into the U.S. Army. 

1943: Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters recorded "Pistol Packin' 
Mama" and "Jingle Bells" for Decca Records. 

1954: After 15 months on late-night local New York City TV, "Tonight" 
with Steve Allen debuted on NBC. Later hosts included Ernie Kovacs, 
Jack Paar, Johnny Carson, and Jay Leno.

1976: Poet Hondo Crouch died. He was the owner, police chief, and 
city manager of Luckenbach, Texas.

1979: Elton John collapsed onstage while performing "Better Off Dead" 
at the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles. After a brief delay, 
though exhausted with the flu, John returned and completed the 
concert.

1986: United Way in Cleveland released 1,429,643 helium-filled 
balloons, the largest balloon release in history.

1989: Sony shelled out $3.4 billion in cash for Columbia Pictures.

1991: A Decatur, Alabama, auto dealership accepted a 450-pound bull 
as part trade-in on a Lincoln Town Car.

1993: Republican Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas was indicted 
on charges that, as Texas state treasurer, she had misused state 
facilities and employees. The indictment was dismissed for technical 
reasons; Hutchison was reindicted, and later acquitted.

1995: Time Warner bowed to public pressure and agreed to stop selling 
so-called "gangsta" rap music, known for its violent, sexually 
explicit lyrics.

1998: St. Louis Cardinal Mark McGwire's record-breaking season ended 
with his 69th and 70th home runs.

2003: A Brazilian prisoner who tried to escape from Sao Paulo prison 
while dressed as a woman was caught because he couldn't walk in high 
heels. Guards said the man looked like a beautiful woman but waddled 
like a duck.

2003: Dancer-singer-actor Donald O'Connor died in Calabasas, 
California, at age 78. 

2004:  NBC announced that  Conan O'Brien would take over for Jay Leno 
the "Tonight" show in 2009.

2006: A burglar ransacked the living room of a house in the Dutch 
town of Tiel. Unfortunately, the 20-year-old thief  couldn't resist 
playing the piano he found there, and his music woke the homeowner, 
who called the police. The owner did not notice how well the burglar 
played.
