My mom used to make a recipe similar to this one when I was little. It
may have been the same one.

WAR CAKE OR POOR MAN'S PUDDING          


2 c. dark brown sugar
2 c. hot water
2 heaping tbsp. shortening
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. cloves
1 lb. raisins
3 c. flour
1 tsp. soda dissolved in 1 tsp. hot water


Boil the first six ingredients for 5 minutes. Set aside to cool,
stirring often, gradually mix in flour and soda. Batter is thick. Bake
45 minutes at 350 degrees in two loaf pans.
