My mom used to make a recipe similar to this one when I was little. It may
have been the same one.

WAR CAKE OR POOR MAN'S PUDDING

          2 c. dark brown sugar
          2 c. hot water
          2 heaping tbsp. shortening
          1 tsp. cinnamon
          1 tsp. cloves
          1 lb. raisins
          3 c. flour
1 tsp. soda dissolved in 1 tsp. hot water

Boil the first six ingredients for 5 minutes. Set aside to cool,
stirring often, gradually mix in flour and soda. Batter is thick. Bake 45
