Mandolinist Butch Baldassari Dead of Brain Cancer at 56
Mon. January 12.2009 3:51 PM EST

Jerome "Butch" Baldassari, a celebrated mandolin player, recording artist and
music teacher, died Saturday (Jan. 10) in Nashville of brain cancer. He was 56.
Although he established himself as a bluegrass musician in the late '80s in the
band Weary Hearts, the Scranton, Pa., native did not restrict himself to that
genre. Rather, he explored in both his recordings and performances the
mandolin's more general virtuosity. In 1990, he founded the Nashville Mandolin
Ensemble, whose repertoire ranged from classical and bluegrass to jazz and
Celtic music. The band's first album, Plectrasonics, was released in 1995. From
1992 to 1998, Baldassari also doubled as a member of the Lonesome Standard Time
bluegrass band. He taught at Vanderbilt University's Blair School of Music for
several years, ultimately rising to the rank of adjunct professor. In the late
1990s, he established his own label, SoundArt Recordings. He was diagnosed as
having an inoperable brain tumor in May 2007. He is survived by his mother,
wife and son.

Jon Hager of the Hager Twins Dies in Nashville
Fri. January 09.2009 9:05 PM EST

Hee Haw cast member Jon Hager, a member of the Hagers vocal duo, was found dead
Friday morning (Jan. 9) in his Nashville apartment. Although an official cause
of death has not been announced, the 67-year-old entertainer apparently died in
his sleep. He had reportedly been in poor health since his twin brother Jim
died suddenly of a heart attack on May 1, 2008 in Nashville. Jon and Jim Hager
appeared on Hee Haw's first episode in 1969 and remained on the popular TV
series until 1988. Raised in the Chicago area, the brothers were adopted by a
minister and his wife. As teenagers, the twins regularly performed on a
Saturday morning music show for teens on WGN-TV/Chicago. After serving in the
Army, they moved to California, where they played in clubs and eventually
landed a job performing at the Disneyland theme park. Buck Owens attended one
of their Disneyland shows and signed them to a management, recording and
booking contract. They spent several years opening shows for Owens, who also
co-hosted Hee Haw. The Hagers signed to Capitol Records in 1969 and charted
five country singles.
