What a great list serve.!!!!, just read all the emails on Neville Bonner,
Don Dunstan and the tent embassy in Canberra.
I've just joined this discussion and advocacy group, Im in my 4rth year of a
Social Work degree at James Cook Uni..38 male and a whitey of Irish decent.
I'm writing this email to throw in my support for the rights of the
indigenous / first Australians to this country and to say to the tent
embassy congratulations on your wonderful work. I also met Neville Bonner
when I was working as a Brisbane Cabby and found him to be a most humble man
and a most honest man. He will be missed in my heart also. As a
colloquial Queenslander I never knew about Don Dunstans efforts on behalf of
the first Australians before reading about it on this list. I'm proud there
are at least some people who have immigrated to this country who have
developed a respect for the first Australians and have fought for their
rights.
As a whitey Im always unsure of just what I should do to support indigenous
Australians without feeling as though I might be encroaching on endigenous
turf or in my own whitey way disempowering the cultural ownership and
traditions of this lands people. So Im always open to suggestions of the
"how tos" and in "what ways" non indigenous Australians can throw their
support behind the First Australian movement without taking away the power
and capacity for indigenous Australians to do what is needed to be done.
