I think you're looking too narrowly at this Laurie.
You're assuming that any appearance by Hanson is going to increase their vote.
all that stuff about not being racist and getting upset when being compared to
hitler was laughable. they also came across as quite well off if not wealthy.
don't assume that 'middle australia' looks or lives like here therefor will
identify with her.
I think she came across badly. what annoyed me about the ABC's presentation was
that - in looking at her family life - they failed to mention her estranged
(gay) son. That in the terms of the show they were doing was a dishonourable
exclusion, didn't even get mentioned. but I think that was complicated by them
thinking that 'that subject' is 'too sensitive' to mention, leaving the viewers
in the dark over her quite complicated and confused attitude to gay people in
general and her son in particular.
but weren't those kids frightening to you? the son especially, who looked at bit
stupid. I really think the more these people are exposed for who they are the
more people will be turned off and away. hearing the kids spit about the
'disloyal' son would have been priceless.
it's the same with the nutcases who go crazy over mardi gras - they've only
boosted it by throwing the 'alternative' up into sharp relief.
is it not possible for us to read stuff like last night's show as anything other
than howard dictating australia (via abc 'dogsbodies')?
