NT Signs Indigenous Agricultural Land Use Agreement
 Thursday 8 April, 1999 (2:38pm AEST)

The first indigenous land use agreement under the Native Title Act ivolving
agricultural land has been signed off there.

The agreement was reached between the Territory Government, a local aboriginal
group and the Northern Territory Land Corporation, and is expected to clear the

way for further horticultural development near Katherine.

As Sarah Hawke reports uncertainty over native title has so far limited
agricultural
 investment in the area.

Sarah Hawke: For nearly two years the Territory Government, Aboriginal groups,
and the local land corporation have being try to find an agreement on an area
known locally as the Venn. Under the agreement a land claim by the local Jawoyn

people will be lifted. In return a small parcel of land will be set aside for
an alcohol
rehabilitation centre funded by the Commonwealth. Aboriginal peopl will be
encouraged to work on the farms. As part of the Native Title process, a three
month advertising campaign has started to determine if there are any unknown
claimants. If not, after this period no other claims can be put on the land.
While
welcoming the agreement, local horticulturalists say there won't be full
certainty
until the advertising process is over.
