Sydney Water can't guarantee full supply on Y2K dates From AAP 9apr99 1.40pm (AEST): SYDNEY Water said today it could not guarantee uninterrupted water supplies over criticial Y2K dates. The corporation's managing director Alex Walker said it had been working since 1996 to identify and rectify millennium bug problems with its software and equipment. But Mr Walker said Sydney Water could not guarantee its suppliers would be able to offer uninterrupted supply. "Sydney Water could not guarantee that its suppliers, including electricity suppliers, would be able to offer uninterrupted supply at any time of the year, including on Y2K critical dates," he said in a statement. "But we can aim to ensure that we are ready to deal with these types of situations when they occur, including possible Y2K-related service interruptions." He said testing and rectification of systems critical to water supply and treatment, sewage treatment and waste water management were nearing completion. As of today, 92 per cent of day-to-day customer service systems were Y2K compliant, he said. Sydney Water aimed to have all systems compliant by June 1999, he said. "Our main concern is that we are prepared internally to meet our objective to provide core services to customers," he said. "This includes making sure key Sydney Water staff are on call during critical Y2K dates." Critical Y2K dates include January 1, 2000, which old computer software may interpret as January 1, 1900, and September 9, 1999 (9/9/99), which may have been used by programmers in the past for special purposes.
