Democrats have been duped, says Beazley

The Australian Democrats had been conned into supporting the GST in
return for environmental measures the
government was already planning to implement, Opposition Leader Kim
Beazley said today.
The Democrats tied their support to restrictions on the diesel fuel
rebate and measures to improve air quality and
reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
But leaked documents show those measures are almost identical to
recommendations from the the National Road
Transport Commission already endorsed by vehicle manufacturers and the
road transport and bus industries.
Beazley said the Democrats has been sold a pup.
"Absolutely," he told reporters.
"A grand part of the hoodwink, has been the fact, demonstrated without
any shadow of doubt today, that the emissions
controls ... were going to be done by the government on the
recommendation of the Road Transport Commission.
"This is the the last figleaf if you like of the Democrats' protection
of their deal."
Beazley said Labor had more evidence that the Democrats had been dudded
and would use it in a last ditch push to
try to get the party to abandon its deal to pass the GST.
