Mabo Day anniversary
 celebrations kick off in Qld
 Thursday 3 June, 1999 (7:41am AEST)

Street parades are being held throughout Queensland
today, to celebrate the anniversary of Mabo Day.

Mabo Day marks the 1992 Federal Court decision
recognising indigenous rights to native title.

The president of the National Secretariat of Torres Strait
Islanders, Francis Tapim, says the day is slowly gaining
 recognition.

"The event is not a protest event, but it's an event that we
celebrate for the handing down of the native title decision
 in 1992," Mr Tapim said.

"We get together and we celebrate and at the same time
make the wider community [aware] of the native title
 decisions."
