The "National Principles and Guidelines for Rangeland
Management" have finally been released after a lengthy
community and organisational consultation process.
Proper management of Australia's rangelands is an area of
major ecological, economic and social concern.
The strategic document's 25 year vision for Australia's
rangelands is
The Australian community is committed to achieving
ecologically sustaniable rangelands management,
supporting diverse social, cultural and economic
activities.
As someone who believes that traditional management practices
of First Peoples lie at the core of regaining a degree of
balance into rangeland life it is encouraging to read in the
final document:
Guideline 1. Clear and unambiguous roles for all people
and organisations with rangleland management
responsibilities, shoud be outlined, including mutual
respect, recognition and support for traditional
practices where they are appropriate.
The document also says:
There is an important role for current and future
successful native title claimants in the planning and
implementation of regional strategies. Their traditional
interests should be recognised, supported and where
appropriate, incorporated in regional planning. The
interests of pending but unresolved native title
claimants also require sensitive consideration.
