Ahh! nothing like being savaged by the Times art critics to assure a major
public success!
I liked the line:
"The choreography favours unison movement staggered across the stage like a
chorus line lifted from MTV. Each scene has its own single motif, is
totally self-contained and is separated from the next by a blackout."
I'm sure Allen Robertson has absolutely no knowledge of such things, but
this is exactly the way that most "authentic" ceremonial performances are
presented. Sometimes you actually wait a day or more between each segment!
Kooris had been doing it that way for a long time before MTV came on the
season, and will probably be doing so for a loing time after it has
disappeared!
Then there was the observation that:
"After the entire cast comes together for another unison group scene The
Dreaming stops. It doesn't end, doesn't reach a finale. It just stops.
Still, much of the audience whooped its appreciation."
Again, of course, this simply often happens in the "authentic" version of
the stuff. And that naughty audience! They liked it! Just goes to show the
inability of the population to understand the essence of art criticism. If
you can't blather, then slander!
I always like the juxtaposition of the "I don't like it , so it can't be
art" from the critics with the "if it's art, I don't like it" line from
some other sections of the community! Sounds like Bangarra must have got
the show just about perfect!
