Mandatory sentencing
criticised by children's
organisation

An international organisation has called for the
abolition of mandatory sentencing in the
Northern Territory and Western Australia.

The British-based International Save the
Children Alliance has released a report on the
performance of 25 countries, implementing the
United Nations Convention on the Rights of the
Child.

Louis Schetzner from Australia's National
Children's and Youth Law Centre says the
report condemns mandatory sentencing.

"It quite clearly states that the mandatory
sentencing laws as they operate in the Northern
Territory and Western Australia are in breach of
a number of international human rights
conventions," he said.
