Police remove Aboriginal protest

9.20am (AEDT) POLICE have removed an Aboriginal protest
outside Government House in Adelaide, making two arrests after
moving in at dawn.
Adelaide Council workers have also cleaned up the area, the scene
of a campsite and fire for much of the past three weeks.
The action was signalled by the South Australian Government
yesterday despite some commitment to listen to the grievances of
those involved.
The protest began before Christmas by members of the
Arabunna people from the Lake Eyre region in South Australia's
far north who wanted an end to the Roxby Downs uranium mine.
They claim the mine's operators, WMC Limited, have been
involved in acts of genocide because of the damage done to the
land and the water supply.
WMC officials have agreed to meet the protesters next week but
Arabunna leaders remained determined yesterday to continue
their action outside Government House in a garden area they
dubbed genocide corner.
However, acting Premier Rob Kerin said that laws had been
broken and there was a growing expectation in the community
that action would be taken.
That action came this morning with several protesters moved on
and their banners and signs taken down.
Police said a 50-year-old woman and a 53-year-old man were also
arrested and charged with failing to cease loitering.
It was not immediately known if the protesters planned to try to
return to the site.
