implication than information.

Police to break up city protest

 6jan00

THE State Government has declared "enough is enough" at the
Aboriginal protest in Prince Henry Gardens, vowing to send in the
 police.

The behavior of the protesters including an assault yesterday
which left a man in hospital with a fractured skull has upset
 some community members.

"A lot of people out there have said enough is enough," Acting
Premier Rob Kerin said yesterday. "We have got no problem with
their right to protest, but there is an expectation from the
community that if people break the law, we will act.

"There was certainly some leniency shown initially, but the camp
fire has started to annoy a lot of people now that they are back
at work and back at the shops."

Mr Kerin's comments came after a meeting with police, Adelaide
 City Council and Government officials.

He would not reveal when police would be called in, saying:
"That's an operational issue, but there is a sense of urgency."

The protest against mining at Olympic Dam yesterday entered its
 16th day.

Mr Kerin said council by-laws were being breached by lighting
fires, camping and erecting signs. And other laws were being
broken by people who harassed passers-by, damaged property
and defecated in the National Soldiers' Memorial.

Protest leader Kevin Buzzacott and his group yesterday held a
range of meetings and filed complaints about how they were
 being treated.

They met Opposition Aboriginal Affairs spokesman Terry Roberts,
Equal Opportunity Commissioner Linda Matthews and were visited
by State Ombudsman Eugene Biganovsky. Mr Buzzacott laid a
complaint that his group had been victimised by the Government
and the council on the basis of race.

Meanwhile, violence flared at the site twice yesterday.

A brawl involving two men erupted just after 11am with one being
knocked to the ground. The other suffered a cut above his right
 eye.

Seconds later, another man also began brawling with one of the
two involved in the first fight.

Then at 6.20pm, violence again flared when a man lying on the
ground was struck on the head by another man and knocked
unconscious. The victim was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital
 with a fractured skull.

Police had made no arrests last night.
