We are calling for your help in a worldwide e-mail campaign of protest
against the french oil distribution company TOTAL, responsible for the
black tide of oil on the coast of Brittany, France.
The campaign started in France. We launched it in Brazil a few days
ago and we are now sending e-mail messages worldwide inviting people
to join us in the protest.
Thank you for your help in this effort prevent further damage to the
global environment.

" Black Tide " in the coast of the Bretagne (France)
On 12/12/99, the oil tanker " ERIKA ", serving the TOTAL
multinational, broke in two parts, when sailed 31miles off Bretagnes
coast. Although no Human lives were lost, the oil (approximately
10.000 tons) spilled into the sea and the unfavorable meteorological
conditions can generate an ecological catastrophe. On the following
day, the two parts of the ship had sunk 120m of depth and there they
remain until today.
In the total there are 28.000 tons of oil (of which a part is still in
the tanks of the sunken ship) that threaten the marine and coasting
ecosystem. The meteorological conditions and the nature of the product
make the attempts of pumping, or dispersion, totally inefficient.
For the CEDRE (Center of Documentation and Research and
Experimentation on the accidental pollution of Waters) the product,
for its nature of the type ' chewing gum', although ' not very toxic
', is the highly polluting and 28.000 tons of this product could
pollute more than the 240.000 tons which " Amoco Cadiz " spilled in
the same region in 1968.
The shipwreck zone causes a lot of worries to the researchers as it is
a region of " hibernation " for birds and marine mammals as penguins,
' guillemots... among others.
For the " Greens ", French environmentalists, the TOTAL Company is
fully responsible for hiring an old, ' tired ' ship, that does not
meet the most recent rules of security, sailing under the flag of the
Island of Malta, known for being the most careless flag of convenience
as it relates to the security controls and maintenance of the ships.
In short, we reproduce the phrase of the ' Greens ' that translates
the opinion of the majority of the observers: " This shipwreck is not
due to the fatality. If " Erika " has broken is not because of the
sea, or the crew. It is due to the search for the 'cheapest always '
".
One more time, the victim is the Environment.

The Erika accident is appearing as one of the most serious ecological
catastrophes due to the oil transportation.
By transporting the oil in a tired ship, under a careless flag ',
TOTAL carries the main responsibility for this accident.
As a consumer citizen, please be advised that we will be watching the
measures that you will take in order to make your activities
compatible with the economic, social, environmental sustainable
development.
Therefore, I invite you to compromise yourself in 3 points:
1) Finance the prevention and restoration of the ecological damages of
this catastrophe;
2) Pump integrally and without waiting, the oil still contained in the
pieces of the ship,which constitute two time-bombs;
3) Type and sign a ' Letter of Intention ' committing to fitting the
oil carrier and foreseeing not to use ships under ' careless flag',
more than 20 years old, without double hull or separate compartments.
